Background

In May 2020, EDC began a study to help EDC projects better understand the effects of COVID-19 on project beneficiaries and the ways that beneficiaries are resilient to multiple shocks and stressors during the pandemic. The purpose of this research is to (A) provide project management and stakeholders with useful information to help shape short-, medium-, and long-term responses, and (B) contribute to a larger understanding of resilience among project beneficiaries.

The six participating projects, listed below under "Participant Projects," are in the order in which they began collecting data. Research participants include teachers, principals, parents, and youth. Each project is collecting data from approximately 250 to 500 individuals monthly via a close-ended phone survey administered by field staff. Beneficiaries are asked questions about COVID-19 prevention measures, access to basic needs and services, health, education, livelihoods, violence, and how they are coping during the pandemic. Each project will engage in several rounds of data collection over the next several months.

Participating Projects

Learn more about each of the projects using the links below.

  • USAID Let’s Read Project, Zambia: Working with the Ministry of General Education and partners VVOB, Kentalis, and Resonance, EDC is improving reading outcomes for approximately 1.4 million children attending pre-primary (kindergarten) through grade 3 in Zambian public and community schools.
  • USAID Accelerated Quality Education for Liberian Children: This project is implemented by EDC and Liberia’s Ministry of Education and focuses on improving education for out-of-school learners through building the government’s capacity to offer high-quality accelerated learning programming.
  • Selective Integrated Reading Activity (SIRA), Mali: Alongside the Ministry of National Education, Save the Children, School to School International, the Institute for Popular Education, the Malian Organization for Support to Children in the Sahel, and CRC Sogema, and funded by USAID Mali, EDC is improving reading outcomes for Malian students in grades 1 and 2 through the SIRA project.
  • USAID Enhancing Services and Linkages for Children Affected by HIV and AIDS (ELIKIA), Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC): Implemented by EDC together with three of the DRC’s provincial Divisions of Social Affairs and partners Catholic Relief Services, Action pour les Droits Humains, Gouvernance Démocratique et Economique (ADHG), Le Bureau Diocésain des Œuvres Médicales (BDOM) Kolwezi, Cris de Secours aux Enfants Marginalisés (CRISEM), and Réseau National d'Organisations Assises Communautaire (RNOAC), ELIKIA works to improve the health, well-being, and economic security of more than 30,000 HIV-affected orphans and vulnerable children and their caregivers through a comprehensive case management approach.
  • USAID Huguka Dukore Akazi Kanoze (HDAK), Rwanda: EDC leads the HDAK project, which provides young adults with learning and internship opportunities, entrepreneurship training and coaching, and access to financing, family planning, and reproductive information.
  • USAID Honduras Reading Activity (HRA): Through the USAID Honduras Reading Activity, EDC supports the Government of Honduras, in collaboration with other activities and stakeholders, to improve reading instruction for Honduran students in grades 1–6.
